Updated March 19, 2010

ISDCF is organizing a demonstration for March 9, 2010.

The committee: Al Barton, Brian Claypool, Harold Hallikainen, Jerry Pierce, Jim Smith, Kevin Wines, Matt Basford, Michael Karagosian, Reiner Doetzkies, Susie Beiersdorf, Paul Klamer, Mike Radford, Rod Archer, Joe Hart, Nick Mitchell, David DesRoches, Jean-Philippe Viollet

Section 1 - GOALS

The primary goal is to demonstrate systems that can play back SMPTE-DCP packages, including closed captions.

The specific goals of the demonstration:

Demonstrate:

1) Play a features and trailers that was mastered using SMPTE-DCP standards

    1. Play back on three different systems: Sony system and two servers driving the TI/Christie projector.

    2. Play back one trailer mastered using Interop-DCP to show backward compatibility with existing standard

    3. Content will be encrypted using SMPTE-KDM. Some content (trailers) may not be encrypted

  1. 2) In-Theater closed caption system will be demonstrated using in-theater SMPTE standard hardware interfaces.

    1. Rear Screen & Closed caption personal devices will be demonstrated.

  2. 3) HI/VI (hearing/visual impaired audio tracks) will be demonstrated using labeled audio per SMPTE spec and output routing to “standard” output ports.

Key items for demonstration of SMPTE-DCP package:

    1. 2K and 4K content can play in a single Show Play List

    2. Open Subtitles play correctly, even past reel boundaries

    3. Closed Captions are routed correctly and have the correct timing even across reel boundaries

    4. Multiple Closed Captions work

    5. Labeled Audio works properly

    6. Systems are backwards compatible for legacy content (InteropDCP)

4) Show playback of a 3D package prepared in SMPTE-DCP standard (no ghostbusting) - Not part of the main demo, but an aside.

-----

NOT demonstrating:

    1. 3D subtitles and captions

    2. TDL or FLM operation

    3. Supplemental package loading or playback

Technical Notes for Guest Equipment for the ISDCF SMPTE Package Demo

AUDIO

SERVERS

Audio output should be provided on 8 male XLR cables providing balanced AES signals.

Your output cables should be 6’ long to ensure that they can reach the audio switch inputs.

This applies to all servers, whether rack mounted or embedded.

The assignments are 1/2=L/R 3/4=C/sub 5/6=Ls/Rs 7/8=Le/Re, 9/10,11/12, 13/14=unused, 15/16=HI/VI.

Since our theatre is actually 5.1 EX, Le & Re are actually Back-Left-Surround and Back-Right-Surround.

We have an audio switch that will select among the various AES sources, but NOT change any channel assignment.

If your server and cable provides the wrong gender, please supply female-to-female barrels.

If your server and cable provides unbalanced outputs (including coax), please provide the appropriate transformers – we do NOT have sufficient spares.

HI/VI DELIVERY

HI/VI presentation equipment should be prepared to accept a single AES source coming from a balanced female XLR outlet.  (We are not currently planning for more than one piece of HI/VI equipment.  If multiple pieces of equipment are vying for this one signal, let us know in advance so that we can provide splitting).

CLOSED CAPTIONS

We have a single Rear Window Display installed in the theatre.

The Rear Window Display cable is run into our booth and drops in the server racks

The cable is terminated as DB-9, female, 3-wire.

Servers or interface units should provide a DB-9, male output for direct connection.

We have a service loop sufficient for devices to be installed in our racks, but not for a projector-embedded server to reach.

(if a projector-embedded server requires a direct connection to the Rear Window Display, a 50’ extension cable should be brought).

NETWORK ADDRESSES

Server IP addresses:

11.255.5.39 XDC

11.255.5.59 (available if there’s additional server coming)

11.255.5.69 Sony

11.255.5.79 Doremi

DLP Projector IP address (accessible to only one server at a time):

11.255.5.156 (NEC)

11.255.5.157 (TI head inside NEC)

Closed Subtitles Server (accessible to only one server at a time):

11.255.5.58

If more equipment is being provided that requires IP addresses, please let us know in advance and we will update this list.

KEYBOARD & MONITOR

We have a KVM switch available for rack-mounted servers.  It offers a DB-15 VGA connector (for an LCD monitor) and PS2 or USB (for keyboard and track ball).  We have two monitors which can access any of the three (or more) servers.  This means, with three servers, at least one is always not being monitored.  If your server requires different monitor/keyboard combinations, bring them.

BOOTH ACCESS

Equipment deliveries have drive up access to a 6’4” dock.  We do not have a forklift and the dock is higher than most lift gates we’ve seen (which is a lot).  Come prepared with an appropriate ramp or your own contingent of Marines, if your equipment would otherwise have difficulty ascending a flight of stairs with a 90° turn.  We do not have staff available to assist with heavy lifting.  Most of you have been through this, it hasn’t changed.

There is wheelchair access to the theatre, but not to the projection booth.

We will limit each session to 100 people max. YOU MUST BE REGISTERED TO ATTEND! If you register and can not attend, please send a change via comment field below. Separate entry for each attendee. This is not an automated process. Jerry gets emails and updates an excel sheet. You may also let us know if you are participating in the setup day (or helping).

If your main interest is in closed captions, there will be a Closed caption demo at SHOWEST!!! This ISDCF demo will be technical and focused on SMPTE-DCP, not focused on CC equipment!

March 17, NATO demonstration at ShoWest
This will be held in Ballys South Tower, in the 3nd floor Las Vegas meeting rooms, from 10am to 12pm. More information go HERE
