Leq(m) 85 for trailers.
Leq(m) 82 for Trailers.
(According to standards organizations)

However, Leq(m) is a Dolby tool, and I expect proprietary as it is not easy to find apart from in Dolby tools..

I was wondering if anyone has come across any open source tools that can be used to calculate this value? (Ie I intent to write come code to go through them all and tell me the results etc)

Or if there is an equivalent level for Trailers/Ads using a STANDARDS based loudness measurement?

Thanks,
James

Interested to hear if anyone has been using this method causing any issues.

And of cause, this works not only on USB sticks, but also large size hard-discs with FAT/NTFS formatting - so also for short-films or full-length DCPs on larger discs. Never tried it on EXT2/3 formatted discs, but I assume it would work there as well.

Look at e.g.

http://pixelchimp.net/blog/pixel-chimp/ ... -mac-files

http://junecloud.com/journal/mac/create ... ction.html

BTW - James' tutorial on how to create DCP EXT2/3 drives in a virtual machine misses one important point - he creates a GUID partitioned drive, but industry standard and ISDCF recommendation is to create an MBR partition scheme.

The cheaper DCP mastering tools typically come with the ability to create KDMs as well, but simply against a target certificate with no checking to make sure its a REAL DCI certified device.

I understand there is also some open source code that does some form of KDM creation.

In any case, KDM creation on a large scale is more about the TDL (trusted device list) upkeep more then the KDM tool itself. Its relatively cheap compared to the logistics of building and up-keeping a database of DCI certified equipment.

The Wikipedia page in digital cinema has a reasonable break down of tools and what they can do.
I would start there.

Commonly we create our DCPs on a Clipster and generate the various KDMs. Curious if there's just a stand alone generator. So far some of the options will create a DCP, which we are not interested in. Just the KDMs. Any suggestions?

At the time my experience with dcp_inspect was running a few experiments after getting Digital Cinema Tools working on a Raspberry Pi (versionB). I had been using Wolfgang's cinemaslides for years with excellent results, but never thought to validate them. (An article detailing cinemaslides: ]

The company has gone through the time and expense to write and make available a front end to dcp_inspect.

As their website points out, zweib is not only a DCP preparation house, but they also are one of the most experienced teams in the most hostile of dcinema arenas. They have long been the tech team that gets festivals such as the Berlinale running without black screens. To understand the challenge, imagine entering a city where several cinema facilities have offered their auditoriums and equipment for part of the day, but need to continue to play their regular schedule during the rest of the day. They are not friendly to the idea of upgrading their systems firmware/software, or attaching other network tools with their systems.

Meanwhile, zweiB is handling over 200 DCPs that arrive for the festival from all parts of the world, some made professionally and many not. They might be able to QC a few minutes with the director, but there are good odds that the QC room will be different than the auditorium that the movie is assigned to. Hilarity ensues, happy couples have intelligent children, film at 11. ...or maybe they find at the last minute that the director want to show a cut that was just finished last night and sure, the keys are somewhere...oops, she's on the plane...what do you mean it won't play, our entire lives are hanging on this one showing...

I write this because a lot of people don't understand the enormous range of problems that can and do occur at any of the 100's of festivals held around the world. But it is a digression.

The article details the installation of the zweiB DCP Validator front end to Digital Cinema Tools dcp_inspect

The resulting report is pure magic. That zweib uses it for all of their work says a lot for it. That they are giving it to the community is a nice gift.

I've written an article that extends on his video – no knocks intended since his is accurate and concise, just what one wants in a technical video tutorial. In addition to adding background to the problem that James is attacking, the article details the installation of Wolfgang Woehl's Digital Cinema Tools package and an example of making a DCP using the dcinemaslides program from that toolset.

But typically KDMs are generated from a day to a day time frame making the windows, even if tz issues exist, irrelevant.

When ingesting real life content, though, the projectionist needs a high degree of, let's call it intuition, to find and select the right content. It's nearly impossible to teach staff this in a formal way. This very often leads to either missed/incomplete content ingest, or a pragmatic 'ingest everything' approach, filling up servers quickly.

I remember specifically BigHero6, whose drive contained an overwhelming number of versions on different levels. I wonder what rules mastering studios follow to create these? Wouldn't it be useful to shed some light on complex packaging, recommendations, etc.?

While 5.1 is probably the 'best' pragmatic choice even for stereo programs, I guess all even number channel assignments up to 16 are allowed per spec? Any known issues with specific servers with 2 or 4 channel DCPs?
